Randall Made Knives | Model #17 “Astro” Fixed-Blade Survival Knife

Posted on: Dec 30

Randall Astro KnifeRandall Made Knives has been producing high-quality knives for nearly seventy years. Founded by W.D. “Bo” Randall, these knives are known for their hand-made quality workmanship.

Despite the tremendous popularity of the knives among military personnel and knife collectors, the company has always resisted the temptation to mass-produce their products. The result are fixed-blade knives that are unique and perfectly suited to their individual application.

The most notable Randall knife is the Astro. NASA commissioned Randall to create these unique survival knives for its fledgeling astronaut program in the 1950’s. The first astronauts carried their Astro knives into space.

New knives can be purchased directly from the company, starting at around $450. As these knives age, they typically increase in value, with some older models going for much more than the retail price, depending on the knife’s age and condition.

Antique WW2 Japanese Sword | Katanas and Replica Samurai Swords | Militaria

Posted on: Dec 29

WW2 Japanese Katana SwordDelving into the world of Japanese sword collecting is a bit like drinking from a fire hose. There’s a lot of information out there and it’s difficult to make sense of it all. For a new collector, it’s hard to distinguish fakes from the real thing, and it’s tricky to learn about all the different types of militaria available online. I can’t hope to provide you with a good overview here, but I can provide links to comprehensive sources, and point out some of the items currently available for sale.

The most popular WW2 Japanese sword, of course, is the Katana, or Samurai’s sword. These swords often date back hundreds of years, but became popular “spoils of war” for returning American GIs. You’ll find the genuine item for sale on eBay or in local antique shops. However, be wary of any deal that seems too good to be true — swords being sold as the real deal are often fakes or replicas.

Genuine Katana swords from WWII sell for $1,000 or more. If that’s too expensive for you, you’ll also find replica swords available for sale that are attractive and make great additions to any beginning collection.

German Daggers of WWII | Sword and Militaria Expert Thomas Johnson

Posted on: Dec 28

German Daggers of WWII — by Thomas M. JohnsonAfter a long, successful career in the US Military, Thomas M. Johnson embarked on a career as a writer. Specializing in German edged weapons and other German militaria, he is considered on of the leading authorities on the subject.

This book serves as a detailed survey and reference of WWII-era German knives and daggers. It specifically addresses the beginning collector, but is intended for a broad audience — there’s much in here for the specialist collector as well.

This book goes well beyond a catalog of the various knives — this is a study of the knife-making techniques that produced the blades as well as an introduction to the culture and historical context of the times. And, of course, it’s an essential manual for the collector — presenting variations, diagrams and photos of the various patterns, tips on the vocation of collecting, etc.

United States Navy Sword | Cold Steel US Naval Blade | 1917 Cutlass Replica Militaria

Posted on: Dec 26

United States Navy Sword — 1917 Cutlass ReplicaThis is a replica of the last sword issued by the US Navy. A cutlass design, it’s often referred to as a “pirate sword” due to the sweeping cup and hilt design. This saber was issued to sailors from 1917 until the mid-1940’s. In 1949, it was officially made obsolete by the Navy. It had replaced the previous standard issue, a fifty-seven year old model designed in 1960.

The Cold Steel company has been making these replicas to be true militaria collector’s items. It’s an exact copy of an original, featuring the signature twenty-five inch, sweeping blade, as well as a guard made of eighteen gauge, #1055 carbon steel.

All components have been specially treated to resist rusting. The handle is just shy of five inches and is made of sculpted hardwood. It is secured to the base with heavy brass rivets.

The sheath is a leather scabbard made of high-quality leather with brass and copper fittings. The sword weighs 33.7 oz.

Model # is 88CS.

Collectible Case Knives — Centennial Pocket Knife Set

Posted on: Dec 21

Collectible Case Knife SetWhat an amazing set of knives — this is the Centennial Knife Set produced by WR Case in 1989 to commemorate their 100th anniversary of making high-quality knives.

I write about many Case knives on this site, but you won’t see one of these come around often. It’s very rare to find the set fully intact with none of the knives sold off individually. There are 100 knives in the set, each with a lifetime warranty.

Originally priced at $5,000, this set has grown in value to more than $6,000. The auction I’m linking to below includes the original 1989 catalog and an attractive carrying case. It is #251 of only 500 sets made.

This say may be long gone by the time you read this post, but it’s such a find that I couldn’t resist writing about it!
