The 4-ounce Case Trapper #0783 has been a popular and dependable choice for ranchers, farmers, and the rest of us for several decades. The Trapper's spey and clip blades, slightly under 4 inches long, close to a folded length of 4-1/8 inches. Red bone handle slabs could be confused with synthetics, but actually are the real thing sawn from the shin bones of Brazilian Zebu cattle. The bone plates are carved with the Roger's Corn Cob jigging pattern, one of dozens used by the Case company, for a comfortable and secure grip. The handles in the Old Red Bone series receive special treatment to simulate the look of well-worn knives in top condition.
Blade steel is high carbon 6254 stainless steel, with stainless steel bolsters and linings as well. This pocket knife is the older thumb notch type, requiring two hands to open. The Case Trapper does not lock back, but both blades do snap securely into open position, folding again under firm pressure.
Case pocket knives are built heavier than other brands of similar size. You'll notice that blades are stiffer than knives from other companies due to the extra thickness of the steel and the accurate temper. Case knives hold up to hard use, and the extra heft of the handle gives more gripping leverage for the tough jobs. This is more than a gentleman's knife -- the Trapper functions as a utility knife for carpenters and handymen as well as a pocket hunter-skinner for small game and fish.
