A blade of this size isn't enough to be intimidating, and the handle isn't large enough to really grip. Fitting this knife into a search-and-rescue role for slashing seat belts or a last resort tactical knife doesn't quite work. But if it were an option for me to carry one of these, I'd definitely leave the folding lockback at home. You may like the ordinary pocketknife design, but once you've played with the automatic version, there's really no going back. Every other folding knife only wishes it could be one of these.

This is only one of several combinations of blade styles and handle materials available. Handles come in black carbon fiber, platinum coated carbon fiber, or less expensive but durable aluminum. Internal aluminum parts are military grade alloy -- trigger and pocket clip are long-lasting stainless steel. With a weight of only one ounce, this would be a great pocket knife for ultralight hikers.

High quality is backed up with an excellent warranty, but Microtech asks for proof of employment in either the military or police forces before accepting knives for repair. For the rest of us civilians, this is a collector's piece. Check your local laws to find out if you're the
exception to the rule.

These are tactical knives built for military and law enforcement purposes, and if you return an automatic model for service Microtech will need proof that you are either active military, employed in law enforcement, or are a certified EMT before they can make repairs. The Elite can be purchased in a manual opening version, so make that choice before you buy.

With or without the spring assisted opening, these knives are among the best of the modern tech variety. Engineered with precision, they have not, however, been created as prybars. Don't use them as punches, screwdrivers, chisels, or throwing knives or you may cause damage that doesn't fall under the warranty rules. Microtech has engineered the Elite to tackle one of the common emergency tool functions, though, by building a hardened metal glass breaker into the butt of the handle. Add the ability to handle any cutting chore and this finely tuned knife is a fine companion in any jungle, natural or urban.

Microtech's polymer anti-reflective coating now comes in three tones for a choice of field conditions--desert tan, jet black or olive drab. The rugged Micarta handle, with the feel of fine rosewood, will match the camo of the blade. With lanyard holes at the butt, the handle isn't quite as stout as a hammer, but the steel tang extends just far enough beyond the handle to serve as an emergency window breaker if needed. The Currahee comes with a ballastic nylon belt sheath to keep the 4.48" blade safely within reach.

Even though the Microtech warranty doesn't cover use it considers abusive, like prying or throwing, I'd have confidence this hefty full tang construction could take the hard use a good field knife will see. In many situations you don't have the option of observing the warranty restrictions. You just need a knife that will hold up, and the Currahee (from the Cherokee words for "stands alone") will do that.
