Not many knives get as much public product testing as this Promate Titanium Diving Knife. Watch the survival episodes Bear Grylls filmed in Costa Rica and the Pacific Islands, and you'll see this rugged knife put to hard use.

In saltwater conditions, titanium outperforms stainless steel, offering edge retention and blade strength comparable to steel knives but with less weight and much better corrosion resistance. The 4-3/8-inch blade will need regular but ordinary maintenance, dulling at a normal rate during use, but you won't need to worry about the titanium edge rotting in the sheath. Titanium doesn't corrode even if stored in seawater.

The Promate Diving Knife was designed by scuba divers and includes special features professional divers find handy. The sharp tip and plain cutting edge handle stabbing and slicing tasks, and on the blade spine, you'll find a serrated section for tougher cable-cutting chores. The diving knife's spine also holds a deep notch for quickly severing smaller lines. A rubberized grip fully encloses the knife's tang, and bolsters keep your hand on the grip whether you're cutting with the blade or smashing and banging with the titanium hammerhead in the butt of the handle.

The Promate Titanium Diving Knife comes with an adjustable sheath made to strap securely to arm or leg. The knife snaps into place for secure carry in any position. Although designed especially for divers, the knife offers many features equally useful in survival situations on land.

See the Barracuda Sharp Tip from Promate for another good titanium knife in a larger style.

Promate sells all sorts of diving/scuba equipment and accessories - they do not specialize exclusively in knives. This is an important place to start my review because any prospective buyers of the Alligator Sharp Tip Dive Knife, or any knife, should know exactly where that knife is coming from. It's disappointing to me that more companies which specialize in knives are not focusing their efforts on the realm of diving. Gerber has made some great water resistant knives like the Gerber River Shorty, but the design is more focused on rafting sports than diving. I often feel like when a company stretches itself too far, in terms of the variety of products they offer, that their products miss out on innovation and quality. However, do not misinterpret my rant: Promate has done nothing wrong by offering regulators, BCDs, mask, fins, gloves, snorkels, dive suits, and all sorts of other accessories; but they've done nothing spectacular with their dive knives.

This Alligator Sharp Tip clip point, plain edge blade is constructed from 301 stainless steel, a mildly appealing metal for a dive knife, and comes with serrated spine and line cutter. The black handle completely disassembles for cleaning and maintenance. A hard plastic sheath with adjustable leg/ankle straps is part of the purchase.

So, do I recommend the Alligator Sharp Tip? It is a decent quality for a good price. But looking at the design, I can't help but think of the U.S. Divers Titanium Dive Knife. Again, made by a company which specializes in diving, not knives, but this is a much higher caliber knife which also disassembles and will last much longer.

Here's a bigger, badder Barracuda! OK, it's technically not any bigger in size than the stainless steel Barracuda by ProMate, but it's much stronger, and boasts a higher quality than its sibling.

That's because it has a 5-inch blade made from solid titanium, and that's about the best you'll find in a diving knife. The blade is fully equipped to handle anything you'd need to tackle underwater. It has a sharpened plain edge as well as a gut hook on the bottom, and a deep serrated edge on top. Both edges come to a long spear point at the tip.

The Barracuda locks into its sheath securely, and releases with one push of a button. When you need to use it, you'll like that the handle is ridged and easy to grip. Plus, it even features a titanium hammer on the pommel which can be a "tank banger" when you need to get your partner's attention, according to the product site... a very safe addition to have.

If you're going to be doing a lot of heavy-duty work underwater, or you just like the security of having a strong, sharp blade, you'll like the feel of the titanium Barracuda over the 420-stainless-steel version.

This is a less expensive titanium knife from ProMate, called the Seal. It's less expensive because it's from a low-profile maker and it's a folding knife.

It's give-and-take. On one hand you'd have the strength of a titanium blade in a compact package in your favor. But on the other hand, you'd have less strength and durability since it's not a full-tang blade, and you may not want to deal with the inconvenience of having to open your knife while underwater.

The Seal sure has one tough blade, though. The titanium blade measures 3.5 inches, and features a lot of different edges for water-related tasks. You'll find a partially serrated edge, an extremely sharp tip, and a deep frontal gut hook along the top edge.

Another handy feature is the attached lanyard on the lightweight handle. It's adjustable too, so you can affix it to just about anything you've got on and you're good to go.

No question about it, this is a decent little underwater utility knife that comes in a convenient lightweight package. However, if you like your titanium blades fixed, then check out ProMate's titanium Barracuda. Or upgrade to a more-serious, and more expensive, dive knife from Underwater Kinetics.
