One of the many legendary and often magical weapons from the Lord of the Rings saga, the Sword of Isildur would make an excellent display piece for the fantasy weapon collector. Less ornate than many LOTR blades, the Sword of Isildur looks like it was built for combat.

United Cutlery produced this 47-1/2-inch longsword and built the weapon with display standards in mind. Quality materials include cast metal pommel and handguard and a grip wrapped with woven leather. The blade itself has the weight of a battlesword but is made from a lower grade of 420 high carbon stainless steel. A blood groove runs down the spine of the blade. Decoration is limited to a simple etching on the base of the blade and a "one tree" symbol cast in the pommel.

Because this is a rat tail tang sword, that blade puts considerable stress on the handle. Trying out the sword on a real target could damage this display quality weapon. United provides a lacquered hardwood wall plaque for display of the Sword of Isildur.

Practical issues aren't unusual with reproductions of magical weapons, and in this case, the technical barriers are more than magical. The sword is too heavy for its light construction and too large for a normal person to grip and swing. Isildur, the wielder of the sword, was no ordinary person. Tolkien described him as seven feet tall and of massive stature. The Sword of Isildur from United Cutlery gets the look right.

United Cutlery's licensed replica of Duncan MacLeod's katana from the Highlander saga exceeds what you'd expect in a display weapon. Made of hand forged high carbon steel, this comes very close to the quality of entry-level cutting katanas.

Although not as rugged as a sword truly designed for tamashigiri, this replica of the katana used by the famous Scottish immortal warrior compensates with accurate details taken from the actual prop specifications. In the movie, Duncan acquired the katana from his samurai teacher. Ordered to commit ritual suicide because of passing on his swordsmanship skills to a foreigner, Hideo Koto requested that Duncan behead him with his own sword, which Duncan then inherited.

This replica does have the feel of a sword which could do much more than decorate a wall. Forty inches long with a 27-inch blade, the sword is hand-forged and tempered 1045 high carbon steel. That's one of the same grades used for good wushu kung fu blades, able to strike and rebound without being damaged. Although it isn't as tough as a combat quality blade, it could survive light cutting practice unharmed. Since 1045 isn't stainless, some regular maintenance and cleaning with light oil will be necessary to keep the blade spotless. The sword's tsuba and handle are less durable than the blade. To mimic the qualities of carved ivory, United Cutlery cast the ornate dragon head grip from resin. The resemblance to the real material is good.

The katana includes a scabbard similar to the one Duncan used for concealing the weapon beneath an overcoat. Made of leather and imitation leather, the quality isn't as good as the details of the sword, but the carrying system does work.

Samurai 3000 Fantasy Sword by United Cutlery | Futuristic Weapon Katana w/ Scabbard

The Samurai Warrior 3000 Katana from United Cutlery embodies a design from the distant future when plasmium swords represent the best weapons of the samurai path. Although United Cutlery released only a little information about this interesting weapon, a truly functional combat version would apparently require knowledge of advanced physics as yet beyond our grasp.

We'll have to wait until the year 3000 for the combat plasmium sword, but until then, this actually is a well-made display version of what a true samurai may carry in our distant future. The tang of the single-edged high carbon stainless steel blade fits securely into a decorative and oddly practical machined aluminum handle, with some of the styling of the traditional samurai katana but converted to knurled metal. The 28-1/2-inch blade does come pre-sharpened, although users will definitely want to improve on that if testing the sword's physical limits.

Polished metal fittings on the black aluminum scabbard match the design of the katana's handle but aren't as decorative. The katana's blade guard has a lethal appearance, with steel blades set into the aluminum wings of the cross-guard. Symbols engraved in the handle itself represent the Samurai ideals of justice, service and honor.

The katana feels a little heavy for fast action, but maybe that's where the plasmium physics of future swordmasters come in. For the rest back here in ancient times, this is an interesting and unique prototype meant for the serious fantasy weapon collector.

Termed an adult collectible, the Dragon's Lair Sword is enough weapon to require the supervision of sensible adults if it falls into the hands of a minor. Children might see it as a pretty toy, but this is 38-1/8 inches of high carbon 440 stainless steel with some of the practical details of an old fighting weapon. By ancient measures it's a one-handed longsword, but the forward grip and extra set of parrying guards give it at least the look of a two-handed battle sword. This is more interesting than practical, since there's no place for a second handhold up front without encountering some sharp, decorative blades.

Highly polished, the mirror-bright stainless steel sword is double-edged, but not razor-sharp, and does carry a central fullered blood groove in the spine of the blade. If skewering dragons is your favorite sport, the blood channel will make recovery of the sword a little easier. Bladeguards and pommel of the Gold Edition sword really are plated with 24K gold, not imitation, and the grip is wrapped with real leather.

Gil Hibben's Dragon's Lair Sword comes with a decorative wood plaque for secure wall mounting. This fine set includes a certificate of authenticity.

Lord Of the Rings Gimli Battle Axe by United Cutlery | LOTR Collectible Fantasy Replica

A faithful reproduction of one of the main weapons wielded by Gimli son of Gloin in the movie version of The Lord of the Rings, the Battle Axe of Gimli looks like it should actually work. With twin 11-1/2-inch-wide blades of 3/8-inch-thick tool steel, even though this fantasy axe has false edges, it still shows some potential for real two-handed mayhem.

But don't try it out on real targets, since the two steel blades are fixed to the wooden shaft through fittings of brass-plated cast metal. While the axe looks solid enough, this isn't quite a functional design. Accurately proportioned for the shorter but more massive dwarven race, the shaft is only 37-3/4 inches long -- a little too short for two-handed use by human standards but well made of polished hardwood wrapped with genuine leather. Antiqued finishing gives the axe the appearance of age and use.

According to Tolkien's fantasy history, dwarven warriors were always prepared. Like the rest of his kin, Gimli was ready for battle at a moment's notice and carried not just this heavy double-bladed axe, but a beard axe, a walking axe, and two throwing axes during the long campaign through Mordor. Hefting this one alone is enough to inspire a healthy respect for dwarves.

Manufactured for United Cutlery, this LOTR battle axe comes with a parchment of authenticity and a hardwood display plaque decorated with silkscreened symbols. All hardware needed for hanging the wall plaque and mounting the Axe of Gimli is included with purchase. United Cutlery Alaskan Survival Knife by Gil Hibben | Hunting Fixed Skinner Blade w/ Micarta Handle

Without being too critical of what is clearly a well-made knife, I wonder what exactly the Alaskan Survival Knife by Gil Hibben was intended to do. I also wonder why it was endorsed by the Alaskan Professional Hunters Association, because to me it looks like a fantasy blade from United Cutlery.

The Gil Hibben Alaskan Survival Knife actually is made by United Cutlery, the well-known manufacturer of fine fantasy weapons and historical reproductions. Gil Hibben's experience as a hunter and guide in Alaska, and not the knife itself, may have earned the endorsement of the APHA. The Alaskan Survival knife seems more imaginative than practical -- unless there are things prowling the Alaskan wilderness which I've never heard about.

As a hunter/skinner knife, this 12-1/2-inch-long full tang fixed blade might be more than tricky to use. A large portion of the knife's spine is hollow ground to match the belly's cutting edge, and in spite of the deep finger choils cut into the micarta slab handle, it does seem like a slip is very possible. The wide leaf-point blade, 6-7/8 inches long, looks like it would be more at home on the shaft of a spear.

More confusing is the strange half-loop dropped bolster, probably designed for fingertip control -- but again, it looks like this innovation just puts the index finger in harm's way. Even with the professional endorsement, I'd consider this knife a fantasy blade. Among fantasy blades, it's actually one of the most practical I've seen, equipped with a good leather belt sheath appropriate for hunting whatever creature it was built to hunt. The lower grade 440 stainless steel used in this impressive knife is another clue that it's meant for display and not too much real work.

United Cutlery Kommando Knife, Tactical Black | Full Tang Bowie with Kraton Handle M48

Though it's better known for its many styles of fantasy and replica weapons, United Cutlery also designs knives in a tactical style. Imported from China, the practical offerings from United Cutlery include the M48 Kommando Fighter Knife. With the makers and most of the technical specifications somewhere on the other side of the world, we're left with a few doubts about this knife.

United Cutlery provides very little detailed information beyond identifying the steel as 440. Assuming that's the low grade of 440A doesn't eliminate the possibility that a good knife could be found here for a bargain price. With a massive Bowie-style full tang blade 7-3/4 inches long, an overall length of 13-1/4 inches and a fighter style grip of black Kraton with dropped bolsters, the price per ounce is attractive.

A black tactical coating does give the knife a professional look, but the bolted Kraton slabs laid over the full tang handle don't show the perfect fit you should find in a professional knife. Fastenings are minimal and probably will need some adjustment occasionally. There's a respectable amount of steel in this large blade, but also some uncertainty about quality control.

More clues come from United Cutlery's warranty and exchange service, which isn't generous. If buyers do have issues with this knife, the only recourse will be customer service at the retail level. Made by a company more expert at producing knives and swords destined for the wall or costume, the M48 Kommando Fighter has to build a reputation as the real thing. Many other brands of knives in the same price range already have that.

United Cutlery Kit Rae Kilgorin Fantasy Sword w/ Black Blade | 10th Anniversary Collector’s Edition

Kilgorin, the Sword of Darkness in the eternal contest between the good and evil sides of a universe imagined by H.P. Lovecraft, comes to life yet again in this tenth anniversary version created by Kit Rae. Produced by United Cutlery, the commemorative Sword of Darkness comes with a low gloss black blade, proving that the dark side has good tactical sense.

Kit Rae's Swords of the Ancients series follows no specific Lovecraft example but is inspired by his stories of long-ago battles between human heroes and the last of the Ancient Ones, a race which owned this world before our ancestors forced their way into history. These ancient blades channeled powerful magical energies as well as chopping and slashing and stabbing with mystically tempered steel. Kit Rae's handiwork represents his concept of what these blades could have been, had they been real.

The earliest Kilgorin had a less fanciful shape and actually looked like a pretty good sword. The tenth model sports more hooks and scimitar-like blade guards or blade catchers and looks as though it would likely get caught on something if used. This sword is art, not function.

Thirty-four-and-a-half inches long overall, the Kilgorin sword's handle is faux black ivory, and fittings are cast metal except for the horns of the hand guard. Talon-shaped prongs of polymer resin decorate the rear points of the guard. Demonic symbols and serpentine engravings decorate much of the dark sword. Although it's an interesting piece of sculpture, the 420 stainless steel Sword of Darkness is a little mystifying as a sword. In the hand, it feels too light to be practical, but it looks good mounted on the wall beside the print of Valen confronting the Darkness, also included with this version of Kilgorin.

The sword named Molotoch the Slayer, released again by United Cutlery and Kit Rae in 2009, has been one of the more popular swords in Rae's fantasy weapons series, Swords of the Ancients. Inspired by the fiction of H.P. Lovecraft, who wrote of an ancient race long ago vanquished by human warriors, Molotoch the Slayer represents Rae's conception of what the most powerful of those ancient blades could have been.

This blade could qualify as a two-handed sword with an overall length of 45-1/4 inches and a 420 high carbon stainless steel double-edged blade 33-3/4 inches long. The ornamentation of blade guard and pommel allow for only a one-handed grip one the false black ivory handle, so expect some practice before you'll be able to comfortably wield this heavy weapon. The blade itself is a full 3/16 inches thick, with a hollow ground false edge but no blood groove.

The cast metal blade guard shows several death's heads and representations of Vanthar, the desert spider. These symbolize the special powers of the mythical Molotoch sword, which granted the wielder victory through boundless skill, blade speed, and the channeling of the combatant's fierce rage. The decorations on Molotoch's pommel represent vultures consuming the dead.

Kit Rae's weapons are based on his own visualizations of ancient history and are not intended to be practical. That artistic freedom created many very unusual pieces, and Molotoch is actually less fanciful than many in the Swords of the Ancients line. Along with a certificate of authenticity, Kit Rae includes an art print with Molotoch depicting a battle between Vaelen and Naegulus. Each Molotoch sword is also branded with Kit Rae's trademark.

United Cutlery Ninja Sword & Shoulder Sheath | Full Tang Tanto Machete, Black Ronin

United Cutlery made the Black Ronin Ninja Sword good enough to actually use, though it's an odd blend of jungle machete and wakizashi. Like the Black Ronin Tomahawk, the Ninja Sword looks like a fantasy weapon until you get up close. Then it's surprisingly real.

Made from one bar of 420 J2 high carbon stainless steel, there's not much put into this blade beyond heat treating and grinding. The dark coating adds to the ninja mystique of the armor-piercing tanto sword. The grip is only a tight wrapping of black nylon cord around the full tang handle, but it's good enough for a secure if not comfortable hold. A rudimentary bolster and hooked pommel ground from the original blank add a touch more hand security to this very primitive grip. If you do use it for chopping brush, that may keep a jarring blow from knocking this light 27-inch machete/sword out of your numbed fingers.

Sharpening will be essential if you plan to do any real work with the Black Ronin Ninja Sword, but the temper of the steel works easily with ordinary stones -- even better with diamond whetstones -- and putting a good edge on the 17.25-inch cutting length is very possible.

The hard plastic sheath fits either over the shoulder for a behind-the-back system or straps to belt and thigh for wearing on the hip. While the sheath isn't beautiful, it's a better approach than a nylon fabric scabbard and isn't likely to be damaged by the blade's tanto point.
