The black steel spearhead catches the eye immediately and includes some extra cutting edges that hint at old halberd designs, combining the chopping blades of a light battleaxe with the piercing point of the spear. The shape is obviously stamped, not forged, and that does detract a little from the look of the 13-3/4-inch high carbon stainless steel spearhead. Edges are ground accurately and enough fine detail is included that the result is a balanced and symmetrical design that looks like it might actually transfer to a combat model.

The two-piece shaft limits what testing owners might do. The two parts of the black aluminum shaft fit together by threading onto a cast metal insert. Although it looks good when properly aligned, the aluminum threads could strip if over-tightened or cross-threaded, so be careful when putting the spear together for display. The spiked pommel and the spear head itself should fit permanently into the halves of the shaft, but neither fitting was made for rough use.

Apart from the shape of the weapon, there's little decoration on this spear except for the cast metal dragon emblem bonded to the throat of the shaft. The spear seems quite realistic if you've spent much time in the virtual worlds of gaming and will make a nice addition to your collector's wall.

The worksmanship is artistic, not crude nor functional.

Pole arms must be one of the most difficult of the old weapons to duplicate well today -- or at least to ship economically. A single shaft of straight-grained hardwood still ranks as the best handle material for quality long arms. This replica with black aluminum shaft and decorative Celtic cross-shaped spearhead must disassemble for shipping. That's the primary weak point -- any other weak points pale compared to it.

Re-assembled with a cast metal spacer threaded in the joint, the shaft of this six-foot spear is sturdy if you can resist testing it much. For display or for more ceremonial uses, the spear is well made and has an authentic look -- at least in New Age Celtic terms. The spearhead resembles Celtic weapons from gaming history more than any counterpart from old Europe. No one skimped on steel in this spearhead of 440 stainless steel. Cut from one plate of high carbon alloy, the blade reaches 15 inches in length with a strong tang reinforced by cast metal ornamental fittings. Central to the design is the Celtic cross medallion fastened to the hub of the main blade and two smaller axe-blade wings. The lower end of the spear's shaft holds a cast metal spiked pommel.

An 18-inch by 24-inch collectible art print by fantasy artist Clyde Caldwell is included with the Savage Celtic Spear and shows the weapon in the hand of a savage warrior princess.

Attaching the heavy scimitar blade to the shaft requires considerably more than just insertion, and even modern, all-metal welded versions often have serious problems with this. If you would like a pole weapon to hang on the wall, the Black Dragon will do nicely. If you want a pole weapon to play with, and intend to take a practice swing at something now and then, you should look for something stronger. If you want a true naginata for display, you should get something more accurate since this Black Dragon is closer to the Guandao -- a similar anti-cavalry polearm from old China. Naginata were lighter and faster than the guandao, with long sword-like blades rather than this heavy chopping weapon style.

This five-foot-long horsecutter wields a 21-1/4 inch carbon steel blade. The body of the blade has been blackened but has a polished edge, and the overall look is crude. The Black Dragon has not been professionally honed to a sharp edge since this is a piece for display only. Fittings and handle are lightly built, too fragile to solidly support the sculpted blade if the Black Dragon sees any action, even in practice. Even today's combat steel guandao don't match the standards of the real thing.

Guandao were designed for battles against cavalry, and the genuine weapons were strong enough to fell horses and sweep armored riders from their mounts. One of the original horsecutter blades is said to have weighed over forty pounds, but the modern versions range from twenty pounds to five. The Black Dragon symbolizes that weapon. There's nothing wrong with owning a nice display piece, but if you expect more than that from the Black Dragon Naginata, you'll be disappointed.

Seriously, this is a pretty good idea -- a spear head that doubles as a belt knife but gives you the essentials of a real spear when you do need it. The 4.25-inch black oxide coated 420 stainless steel spear head actually could be a sturdy self defense or survival item if properly mounted to a good shaft. If you've ever actually tried to make a spear, or even make a broom, you'll know it isn't quite that simple. Broom handles are also pretty fragile.

My suggestion to owners of the SOG Spirit is to fit the spear head to a straight-grained ash shaft at home where you have access to good tools and plenty of time to do the job well. Cover the end of the shaft with a PVC cap and carry the spear shaft as a hiking staff. Keep the SOG Spirit on your belt until you need a spear. Don't expect a mop handle or tree branch to last long or work well. If you go that route, you could lose the Spirit Fusion Knife in the first creek you cross.

The details are intricate, including etched runic designs on the socket of the spearhead. Viking smiths would have used a complicated process called niello to create the designs on the spear, first carving the pattern and then filling and firing the design with a mixture of sulfur and metallic powders. Hanwei's process involves different steps, but the final product has a similar appearance to the true Niello.

This 12-ounce stainless steel spearhead -- slightly over 16 inches long -- matches the style of throwing spears carried by Nordic warriors and was originally designed to penetrate armour. Vikings carried several of these light spears tucked under an arm as they charged the enemy, throwing them en route before closing for the final hand to hand battle. Though the Hanwei throwing spear is fully functional, owners today may be reluctant to scar the appearance of this historically accurate spear by casting it at targets. Some wear and tear on the 9-1/4 blade should be expected.

The socket of this reproduction accepts a tapered shaft one inch in diameter. For high strength, use only straight-grained seasoned hardwood. Good stock is often available through martial arts equipment suppliers, but a hardwood dowel from the local hardware store could also work. Expect to spend some time shaving it down for that perfect fit.

The cast high carbon stainless steel hammer head outshines the old weapons, yet holds close to the old functional design with only a few modern weak points.

Compared to museum pieces, the handle of this 27-inch long war hammer isn't quite stout enough for the size of its heavy hammer head. Older versions matched smaller hammerheads to longer shafts -- the strap which fixes head to handle was also high carbon steel and more securely pinned. This replica piece uses a plated metal strap and less rugged fastening methods -- the hammer has an authentic look, but in actual use would soon present some problems.

The pommel of hardened carbon steel provides a third attack point but only resembles the old functional pommels. Drive it through a target and it will probably stay in the target, since it isn't attached flush to the base of the shaft.

In spite of all that, this is still a very interesting piece for the collector and will hold up to a few good practice swings if someone wants to get the feel of what once was a common battle tool. When knights became so well plated that swords were ineffective against them, warriors turned to the spiked hammer. The pointed end drove through weak points or hooked riders for a surprise dismount. Where steel couldn't penetrate, the fluted hammer face often did fatal damage anyway, driving lethal shock waves through dented helmets. This modern war hammer copies the one-handed style used against footsoldiers rather than cavalry. Most modern people will need both hands to handle this weapon safely.

Though this compact weapons set isn't combat quality steel, it's good enough to be both functional and entertaining.

The 23-inch sword blade of 420C high carbon stainless steel shouldn't be used for slicing targets -- the temper and the quality of the steel aren't high enough for rough use. Applied against anything substantial, the blade could bend or the edge could turn. Shorter weapons in the set are more practically useful. Two 8-1/2-inch tanto blades fit the top of the sheath alongside the sword hilt, and although the blades are crudely ground, they can certainly be improved with a whetstone. The fistload or battle weapon hidden in a pocket of the sheath doesn't need to be fancy to be effective. Both knives and fistload could become shuriken or thrown weapons. Each requires a different throwing technique and lots of practice. Expect some damage to the blades and points if you learn.

A throwing knife fits to the point of the scabbard, turning this into a crude spear, and the hilt of the sword itself disguises two four-pointed throwing stars. Altogether, the ninja weapons set matches movie versions of ninja combat assortments better than it matches the real tools of the trade. If you're willing to risk some minor damage to the pieces, this eight-piece set provides several types of shuriken good enough for practice, as well as a fascinating but decorative sword.

The monk's spade has an intriguing history with a foundation in the non-violent traditions of China's warrior monks. Following the path of enlightenment by choice, these men still had social and moral obligations. Monks often carried money from temple to temple, making themselves a favorite target of skilled highwaymen. Many of the faith shunned weapons but needed practical protection. Farm tools evolved into unique monastic weapons like the monk's spade, useful for fending off bandits as well as for digging the occasional grave for those who tried too hard. The decorative rings link back to the weapon's agricultural past when the tool doubled as a plow blade pulled by other members of the family. Still a visual part of the monk's spade, the rings serve no combat function.

Weapons -- including the Tiger Fork Trident -- evolved to fit the challenge. Once classed as a heavy weapon, the lethal points of the trident could intercept and hold an attacking beast, keeping the wary traveler out of range of its claws and teeth.

This lighter Wushu version of the Tiger Fork Trident shows the same lethal concepts but in a streamlined build better suited to athletic demonstrations. Chrome plated high carbon spring steel tines fit to a strong metal shaft tipped with a chrome steel pommel. The red tassel at the base of the fork was a common feature on old weapons, providing some visual distraction and guiding blood away from the shaft and grip.

The Tiger Fork saw its origins in the fisherman's trident spear and even in the farmer's pitchfork, neither of which was designed for combat. Even so, this light Wushu version -- 88 inches long and three pounds in weight -- can't be considered a toy. The tines of this Tiger Fork will do real damage. Use some common sense when loading this trident in the van or the car -- the nylon carrying case won't hold back the points for long.

Many of the old mainstay weapons resembled farm tools for very efficient reasons. Adapting familiar implements to combat gave indentured soldiers a huge training advantage based more on simple movements and physical strength than on acrobatics. Though the Tiger Fork impresses modern onlookers as an unusual weapon, in its day the trident made perfect practical sense.

Heavier and with a more pointed blade designed for thrusting from horseback as well as for slashing movements at charging speed, the base of the Kwan Dao's shaft was tipped with a lethal spiked pommel.

Making this heavy weapon light enough for modern Wushu may reduce the strength of the Kwan Dao too far to be very practical. Though the weapon looks good with its ornate cast brass dragon's mouth bolster, the 24-inch chrome plated spring steel blade of this modern Kwan Dao won't hold up to striking practice. Watch for problems in the joint between blade and shaft, a common trouble spot in modern reproductions of this heavy weapon.

There's less chance of trouble at the other end, since the spiked pommel is only 9.5 inches long and lighter than the blade. This isn't a symmetrical weapon with a centered point of balance, and many will find it awkward to learn. At 8-1/2 pounds, it's hard to think of this Kwan Dao as a light training weapon, but compared to the battlefield versions weighing 20 pounds or more, it's a toy. The traditional training Kwan Dao were even heavier, with some weighing over 100 pounds.

Use caution when practicing movements with this Wushu version. This Dragon Head Kwan Dao wasn't designed for rough treatment. At 82 inches in length, it's awkward to carry safely even in the fitted nylon carrying sheath.
