It would take a lot for a multi-function tool to ever surpass the standard that Leatherman has already set in place. So does SOG break the mold with the S-60 Powerlock? Maybe.
Let’s take a look at the basic features: It comes with 15 different tools: an array of small/med/large flat-head screwdrivers, Phillips screwdriver, pliers, 1/4-inch drive, wire crimper and cutter, wood saw, plain/serrated knife blade, measuring ruler, bottle opener, and a pair of spring-loaded scissors.
And here’s where it differs from a standard Leatherman: SOG’s patented Powerlock technology and “Compound Leverage” system. This means each component is fully-locking, and the gear-driven pliers provide extra leverage force. Comfort grips are included with the set as well, and can be removed at any time.
Sounds impressive. But let’s not forget that Leatherman was the one that started it all. If you’re looking for a product to replace Leatherman’s complete-coverage lifetime warranty and durability, we don’t know yet if the SOG is it. Check back in about 20 years!
