Adams Large Maple Barbeque Board A full two feet long and sixteen inches wide, the J.K. Adams BBQ-2416 Maple Barbeque Board provides enough room to carry a large turkey without overlapping the edges of the board. Juices and sauces stay on the tray, caught by the trough milled into the circumference of this large rock maple serving board.

Designed for outdoor barbeque service as well as indoor dining, the laminated solid maple tray is a full inch in thickness -- actually lighter than the original models J.K. Adams manufactured until 2003, and easier to carry. The curves in the juice moat mark the location of fingerholds cut into the bottom of the tray. Extra grip means extra balance when carrying slippery and awkwardly weighted cooked meats. Use it in the dining room for carving roasted meat and poultry or as the base for a centerpiece dish.

The finish protects the wood from stains and heat damage, but oiling the board with cooking or mineral oil occasionally gives it continued protection against moisture. Sugar maple is one of the best choices of wood for cutting boards, and the barbeque board holds up well to both carving knife and carving fork.

Cleanup is easy -- just wash the board in warm water with a mild detergent. This serving tray isn't designed for machine dishwashing -- a quick dip and rinse is enough. Leaving the board in water for long periods could cause warping or splitting. Make sure the board is completely dry before storing it away.

J.K. Adams Maple Carving Barbeque Board | BBQ-1612 | Hardwood Serving Trayhttp://www.onlyknives.com/j-k-adams-maple-carving-barbeque-board-bbq-1612-hardwood-serving-tray/ http://www.onlyknives.com/j-k-adams-maple-carving-barbeque-board-bbq-1612-hardwood-serving-tray/#comments Tue, 22 Dec 2009 17:41:49 +0000 JT Hats http://www.onlyknives.com/?p=7545 J.K. Adams Maple Carving Barbeque Board The J.K. Adams BBQ-1612 Maple Barbeque Board isn't a cutting board, even though it's made from the same solid rock maple hardwood that constitutes some of J.K. Adams finest. This board was built for barbecue carving and serving and has gone through several important design changes since its conception.

Now only an inch thick, the board weighs less than before its update in 2003. Undercut fingerholds milled into the bottom of the board match up to the curved parts of the juice moat, eliminating any awkward searching for a grip while balancing a heavy cut of meat. The moat itself is wide and deep, able to contain sauce drippings and meat juices without spills. Carve poultry, divide barbequed ribs, and slice roasts without concern for the tough surface of this heavy duty serving board. The rock maple barbeque board holds up to both carving fork and carving knife and fits indoor dining service as well as outdoor dinners.

The sealed wood board should be regularly oiled to maintain its water resistance and protect it from warping or cracking. Don't test it in the dishwasher -- the food grade adhesive used in its construction is designed for hand washing with a mild detergent. A short immersion in warm dishwater won't do it any harm, but don't leave it submerged longer than a few minutes.

Store the board on edge to allow air circulation on all sides. Putting the board away wet encourages mildew that could permanently stain the wood surface.

Hardwood Knife Block w/ 6 Steak Slots | Viking 9 Slot Cutlery Storagehttp://www.onlyknives.com/hardwood-knife-block-w-6-steak-slots-viking-9-slot-cutlery-storage/ http://www.onlyknives.com/hardwood-knife-block-w-6-steak-slots-viking-9-slot-cutlery-storage/#comments Sat, 19 Dec 2009 13:45:56 +0000 JT Hats http://www.onlyknives.com/?p=7427 Hardwood Knife Block w/ 6 Steak Slots Viking's 9-Slot Knife Block offers room for a wide selection of prep knives, with eight slots available for paring, slicing, and carving and six more base slots for a set of steak knives. The wood strips laminated together for this solid hardwood storage block are rock maple, one of the best traditional choices for kitchen service and one of our most renewable natural forest materials. With routed horizontal bands that accentuate the rectangular look, the Viking block brings an eye-catching design to a kitchen fixture that's rarely noticed.

Horizontal knife slots require a little more attention when slipping a knife out of the block -- pull the knife straight, or the blade may bind. Vertical slots give play in a natural direction but also are rougher on blade edges. The horizontal slots place less stress on cutting edges and keep the cutting steel away from damp wood. Eight slots give enough room for the most used carving, paring, slicing and chopping knives in home kitchens. The largest cleavers will need a different home. Steak knife slots store six steak knives under the lip of the main block where they aren't apt to get in the way of work.

The eight-pound block is heavy enough for stability without taking up excessive counter space. Construction shows attention to detail, with all exposed edges carefully chamfered and the block itself raised on small plastic feet. Just tall enough to keep the block out of spills, the feet provide extra friction on wet surfaces.

For best care, a wipe down with mineral oil should be the only cleaning needed -- the treated surface repells sauces and stains. Positioning is one of the most important considerations. Keep the block away from heat and steam, and never put knives away while still wet.

J.K. Adams Wooden Knife Tray | Cutlery Drawer Storage Maple ID-616 Largehttp://www.onlyknives.com/j-k-adams-wooden-knife-tray-cutlery-drawer-storage-maple-id-616-large/ http://www.onlyknives.com/j-k-adams-wooden-knife-tray-cutlery-drawer-storage-maple-id-616-large/#comments Fri, 30 Oct 2009 19:26:13 +0000 JT Hats http://www.onlyknives.com/?p=7076 J.K. Adams Wooden Knife Tray The J. K. Adams ID-616 (top tray of the three shown) also comes in unfinished pine, so check the product when it arrives to make sure you've received the much superior Vermont maple version. Sixteen-and-a-half inches long by nine wide, the two-inch thick maple knife rack slides in one side of a kitchen utensil drawer. Slots hold six full-sized kitchen knives and six more steak knives or paring knives. The slanted handle rest allows easy access to your favorite cutlery. Edge-down storage and organized space prevents the jumble of sharp edges that threatens both fingers and blades.

J. K. Adams has manufactured high-quality Vermont maple knife blocks at its factory in Dorset, Vermont, since 1944. Adams knife storage systems are guaranteed against defects for five years after purchase -- Vermont maple should hold up long after that, since the local hardwood is especially dense and stable. Be careful of the new pine versions, however. Pine could be easily damaged by blades and split by accidental levering.

Wooden knife blocks offer the best protection for your good knives. To care for your maple storage rack, oil the wood thoroughly with light mineral oil before the first use. Dry your knives completely before placing them in storage to avoid problems with trapped moisture. Water absorbed by unoiled wood could cause the rack to swell and crack.

Best Cutting Board: John Boos Reversible Laminated, Hardwood Maple Butcher Blockhttp://www.onlyknives.com/john-boos-reversible-cutting-board-laminated-hardwood-maple-butcher-block/ http://www.onlyknives.com/john-boos-reversible-cutting-board-laminated-hardwood-maple-butcher-block/#comments Fri, 24 Jul 2009 16:34:23 +0000 JT Hats http://www.onlyknives.com/?p=6705 John Boos Reversible Cutting Board Simple and extremely practical, this hard maple reversible cutting board from famous Butcher Block maker John Boos is the perfect size for counter top use and convenient out of the way storage. Laminated rock maple strips laid out in a 20" x 15" x 1.25" edge grain board give two equally useful cutting surfaces. Since they are easy to mix up where cross contamination is a factor, it's still a good idea to have two.

One of the best cutting surfaces, rock maple rivals beechwood in popularity and durability, gracing professional restaurants, culinary schools and private kitchens across the country. This cutting board is finished with oil and beeswax and guaranteed for one year from time of purchase. Proper maintenance with a regular rubdown of butcher block oil together with proper storage should be enough to ensure this beautiful cutting surface will last for a while.

A couple of layers of paper towels on the countertop make a good non-slip surface for this board--be sure to wipe it down and store it away on its edge soon after use, so the bottom surface doesn't absorb moisture. Excessive exposure to dampness will put the board at risk for swelling and cracking.

Bark River Huntsman Deluxe Knife | Full Tang Survival Bladehttp://www.onlyknives.com/bark-river-huntsman-deluxe-knife-full-tang-survival-blade/ http://www.onlyknives.com/bark-river-huntsman-deluxe-knife-full-tang-survival-blade/#comments Fri, 19 Dec 2008 04:52:38 +0000 admin http://www.onlyknives.com/bark-river-huntsman-deluxe-knife-full-tang-survival-blade/ Bark River Huntsman Deluxe Knife Known for producing simple but quality knife designs whose beauty derives from perfect function, Bark River's deluxe line goes a step beyond the essentials. The Deluxe Huntsman with polished nickel silver finger guard and curly maple handle slabs combines the good look of engineering with the good look of traditional builds.

A shorter version of the full sized hunting knife, the 7" full tang length holds 3.25" of cutting edge, ground from thick .187" tool steel. It's built stout for the prying chores you always encounter in camp, as well as for levering apart joints in bigger game. The flat back of the blade will stand up to a mallet blow for driving through gristle and bone, and offers safe leverage area for your thumb when you're pushing the blade through wood. The full tang construction gives the Huntsman twisting strength all the way to the end of the handle--something no folding knife will ever do.

The curly maple handle slabs are one of the most beautiful and functional American woods for this purpose, with a tight and wavy grain that won't split. If you use this knife long enough to wear the handle down past the polish, it gets even better. Soft wood wears away and hard grain stays put, giving it a natural gripping texture as good as any produced by a machinist. With some knives, the blade might wear out first; this one is built to last.

Queen Cutlery Stockman Folding Pocket Knife | Rare Birdseye Maple Handlehttp://www.onlyknives.com/queen-cutlery-small-stockman-folding-pocket-knife-rare-birdseye-maple-handle/ http://www.onlyknives.com/queen-cutlery-small-stockman-folding-pocket-knife-rare-birdseye-maple-handle/#comments Tue, 16 Dec 2008 06:12:04 +0000 admin http://www.onlyknives.com/queen-cutlery-small-stockman-folding-pocket-knife-rare-birdseye-maple-handle/ Queen Cutlery Small Stockman FoldingTo a novice the classic variations of the American pocketknife must look much the same. Except for the obvious differences of size and number of blades, this tried and true tool always has the same basic form. But, look closer and you'll see many subtle differences that are as much decisions of style as of function. Names refer to handle patterns as much as to blades.

Queen Cutlery sticks to the old patterns in their Pennsylvania factory, using many of the more time consuming hand processes in the construction of these fine knives. Their product line shows the wide variety of handle and blade patterns that evolved to fit the exacting needs of the American workplace and the American frontier.

The Small Stockman, with handle slabs of beautiful American birdseye maple burl, shows the slightly fatter, gentle wave of that particular handle style, developed for reasons only a stockman and knife maker could understand. The 3 3/8" closed length houses three D2 tool steel blades in clip, spey and sheepsfoot patterns. Stout and compact, it's a very practical size even for people who don't work the herds, and the rare birdseye maple handle slabs only increase in beauty and utility over time.

Queen Cutlery Trapper Pocket Knife | Tool Steel Folding Blade, Birdseye Maple Handlehttp://www.onlyknives.com/queen-cutlery-trapper-pocket-knife-tool-steel-folding-blade-birdseye-maple-handle/ http://www.onlyknives.com/queen-cutlery-trapper-pocket-knife-tool-steel-folding-blade-birdseye-maple-handle/#comments Sat, 13 Dec 2008 18:08:32 +0000 admin http://www.onlyknives.com/queen-cutlery-trapper-pocket-knife-tool-steel-folding-blade-birdseye-maple-handle/ Queen Cutlery Trapper Pocket Knife Working from the same Titusville, Pennsylvania, factory that housed their predecessor, Schatt and Morgan Cutlery, Queen still uses many of the old manufacturing processes and holds firmly to the old standards of craftsmanship. Their extensive product line includes many varieties of the American classic pocketknife, with handle slabs of rare woods from both native and foreign sources.

This sturdy pocket trapper knife, 4 !/8" closed, houses two practical woodsman's D2 tool steel blades just under 3 1/2" long. These are the traditional trapper's pair of spear point and spey, for piercing and for cutting as well as endless other applications. The uniqueness of this knife lies in the birds' eye maple handle slabs. One of the hardest and rarest of American hardwoods, the best of this whorled and tight grained wood is cut from benign burl growths on sugar maple and shows a beautiful color and pattern prized by furniture makers for veneer.

The beauty of that wood was of equal interest to traditional knifemakers who sought it out for other reasons. Few woods are so durable as birds' eye, and a knife that survives years of hard use will only develop a better and even more practical gripping texture as the wood wears and ages.

Many of Queen Cutlery's older production pieces are now collector's items, and for good reason.

Queen Cutlery Mountain Man Lockback Knife | Tool Steel Folding Hunting Bladehttp://www.onlyknives.com/queen-cutlery-mountain-man-lockback-knife-tool-steel-folding-hunting-blade/ http://www.onlyknives.com/queen-cutlery-mountain-man-lockback-knife-tool-steel-folding-hunting-blade/#comments Fri, 12 Dec 2008 17:29:49 +0000 admin http://www.onlyknives.com/queen-cutlery-mountain-man-lockback-knife-tool-steel-folding-hunting-blade/ Queen Cutlery Mountain Man LockbackThe Mountain Man Lockback from Queen Cutlery is nearly big enough to match the simple functionality of a small sheath knife, but folds in pocketknife style for easy carry. Built with the strength for heavy work, the lockback function provides security under load, eliminating that extra thought (reminding yourself it can fold back on your fingers) you need when using most pocket knives.

In Queen Cutlery's Pennsylvania factory, craftmen still follow the methods and patterns of a century ago, combining the old reliable knowledge with the new techniques that make sense. Queen's modern products show the same features as the antiques from their predecessor, Schatt and Morgan, whose knives now occupy places on collector's shelves.

Suitable as a small hunting and skinning knife, the Mountain Man will also find many uses at home and even in the woodshop, with the size and grip you need in a utility or camp blade. The 4 5/8" closed length is a little too bulky for the pocket but adapts well to many accessory belt sheaths available today.

Queen Cutlery's tradition of fine production level craftsmanship and the use of the best natural materials result in a simple and very practical knife with collectability. The rare American hardwood birdseye maple provides unique beauty as well as practicality in the handle grips of this unique American design.

Pompeii Pattern Roman Gladius Stainless Steel Maple Medieval Replica Swordhttp://www.onlyknives.com/pompeii-pattern-roman-gladius-stainless-steel-maple-medieval-replica-sword/ http://www.onlyknives.com/pompeii-pattern-roman-gladius-stainless-steel-maple-medieval-replica-sword/#comments Mon, 03 Nov 2008 06:39:36 +0000 Mike http://www.onlyknives.com/pompeii-pattern-roman-gladius-stainless-steel-maple-medieval-replica-sword/ Pompeii Pattern Roman Gladius StainlessYou may or may not be surprised to find out that there are quite a few different kinds of Roman gladius swords. Between 200 B.C. and 100 A.D. four types were discovered: the Gladius Hispaniensis, Mainz, Fulham, and Pompeii. Throughout the years, the gladius sword became straighter, shorter, and more geometric in design. While earlier versions of the gladius may have been sharper and heavier, the Pompeii became the most widely used due to the fact that it was easier to both manufacture and carry.

This particular Pompeii is as true to the historical styling as any other we've seen. The lines are straight, the blade features parallel edges, and the tip is fashioned into a blunted triangular tip. However, one feature to take note of is that the sword's triangulated ricasso (or unsharpened portion of the blade) is triangulated as well. History has yet to prove that any Pompeii swords actually featured this design. But it's branded in our minds as what we think of when we picture a late-period gladius.

Windlass Steelcrafts manufactured this Pompeii replica sword. The blade measures 19 inches, perfect for a close-combat soldier. It's made from genuine high carbon stainless steel. The double-edged blade comes to a sharp spear-tip point, which is shorter than other gladius swords before its time.

The handle and hilt are made from hardened wood, specifically turned ash and maple. On the handle you'll see a formed grip pattern to make it easier to hold. Below the guard is a steel spacer for added durability.

This Pompeii sword also comes with a scabbard. However, it's not intended to be wasp-waisted and belted, but to hold the gladius as a sidearm weapon. Anyone looking to display some centurion pride from eras past will be able to wear it proudly as such.
