You’ll encounter several different categories of sharpening devices out there, and easily hundreds of actual sharpening systems within each category.
A “V” system is a neat invention — it uses stones to sharpen your edges, but takes the guess work out of finding the correct sharpening angle. With a waterstone, it’s up to you hold the knife at just the right angle with respect to the stone. With the Sharpmaker, it’s the stones that get aligned not the knife.
You simply slide the stones into the correct slots, hold the knife perpendicular to the floor, and then just slide the knife down the stone. Couldn’t be easier, right?
It’s a pretty cool system and people really like it. Those who don’t do a ton of sharpening really benefit from the pre-set angles.
The other unique feature that the Sharpmaker offers is its ability to sharpen serrated edges. You won’t find many systems that can do that.
Also included is an instructional DVD, a medium grit stone, and a fine-grit stone.
