A relative newcomer to the knife-making game, SOG knives has been in business for “only” twenty some-odd years. But they’ve made up for lost time to become one of the most innovative companies producing blades today.
The story of the SOG Knives Company begins twenty years before it was formed. During the Vietnam war, an elite US military group with an awkward name went looking for a new knife. Known as the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam – Studies and Observations Group (or MACV-SOG for short), this group designed and commissioned the production of an “untraceable knife”. This knife had to be rugged enough to survive the harsh environments of Vietnam, and yet had to be unmarked and nondescript enough so as to be untraceable to its manufacturer and country of origin. Hence, the SOG Knife was born.
Twenty years later, when forming a new knife making company focused on tactical knives, Spencer and Gloria Frazer looked to this knife for inspiration. SOG Specialty Knives was born in 1986 and has been producing top-quality knives ever since.
Of course, SOG has more going for it than just a name. Founder and Chief Designer Spencer Frazer is a true renaissance man, having worked as an audio engineer, a toy designer and an artist. When he finally got around to designing knives, his diverse background helped him bring new perspectives to an age-old industry. His designs have been innovative and creative, earning SOG a reputation as a true ground-breaker.
SOG is probably best known for its line of Navy Seal knives. These include the Seal Team, the Seal Pup and “Elite” versions of each. SOG also makes a successful line of folding knives that include the best-selling “Twitch” and “Flash”. SOG also features multi-tools such as the “Paratool” and the “Powerlock”.
SOG has recently begun to market a set of knives referred to as “Fusion”. These blades combine futuristic designs with modern technology to produce a unique looking products. Such products include the “Muscle Car”, the “Spirit” and the “Contractor”.
